British Airways (BA / BAW • United Kingdom) Historical Heritage Est. 1932
Designed by artist Theyre Lee-Elliott in 1932 for Imperial Airways, the stylized bird-in-flight emblem was dubbed the Speedbird. It survived the 1939 merger into BOAC and the 1974 creation of British Airways, making SPEEDBIRD the most recognizable radio telephony designator in commercial aviation.
ATC SAMPLE TRANSMISSION: "Speedbird One Heavy, London Control, climb Flight Level Three Five Zero."
Aer Lingus (EI / EIN • Ireland) National Emblem Est. 1936
Named after the three-leaf clover symbol of Ireland painted on every Aer Lingus vertical stabilizer since its early Douglas DC-3 operations. Even on North Atlantic tracks and slot-congested London Heathrow frequencies, Irish flag carrier crews are addressed universally as Shamrock.
ATC SAMPLE TRANSMISSION: "Shamrock One Zero Five Heavy, Kennedy Tower, cleared to land Runway Two Two Left."
South African Airways (SA / SAA • South Africa) Geographic Flora & Fauna Est. 1934
Adopted from South Africa's national animal, the medium-sized antelope famous for pronking leaps across the Karoo arid plains. Although the winged springbok tail logo was replaced by the rainbow sun livery in 1997, the airline retained SPRINGBOK as its official ICAO Doc 8585 radio callsign.
ATC SAMPLE TRANSMISSION: "Springbok Two Zero Three, Johannesburg Radar, turn left heading Two Seven Zero."
China Airlines (CI / CAL • Taiwan) Historical Heritage Est. 1959
Selected by Taiwan's flag carrier to distinguish its radio transmissions from Air China (AIR CHINA) and evoke classical Chinese imperial heritage. Its frequent flyer program and airport lounges worldwide also carry the Dynasty brand.
ATC SAMPLE TRANSMISSION: "Dynasty Zero Zero Six Heavy, Taipei Approach, descend and maintain Four Thousand feet."
Geographic Flora & Fauna Est. 1983
Originating with Phoenix Sky Harbor-based America West Airlines after the Saguaro cacti of the Sonoran Desert, CACTUS survived the 2005 reverse merger with US Airways. Famously, Captain Chesley Sullenberger transmitted "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday, Cactus Fifteen Forty-Nine" during the 2009 Hudson River ditching.
ATC SAMPLE TRANSMISSION: "Cactus Fifteen Forty-Nine, New York Departure, radar contact."
Pan American World Airways (PA / PAA • United States)
Historical Heritage Est. 1931
Founder Juan Trippe named every Pan Am flying boat and jet airliner after 19th-century Yankee maritime tea clippers. For sixty years until December 1991, CLIPPER symbolized American long-haul flag service across every ocean.
ATC SAMPLE TRANSMISSION: "Clipper One Zero Two Heavy, Shanwick Oceanic, report passing Thirty West."
Virgin America (VX / VRD • United States) Geographic Flora & Fauna Est. 2007
Headquartered in Burlingame near San Francisco International Airport, Virgin America chose REDWOOD in tribute to Northern California's coastal sequoia forests (and because VIRGIN was already held by UK sister carrier Virgin Atlantic). The callsign was retired in April 2018 upon integration into Alaska Airlines.
ATC SAMPLE TRANSMISSION: "Redwood Three Eleven, San Francisco Tower, line up and wait Runway Two Eight Right."
AirTran Airways (FL / TRS • United States) Aviation Folklore Est. 1997
Adopted following the 1997 merger of Orlando-based AirTran Airways and Atlanta-based ValuJet (which retired the callsign CRITTERS after the 1996 Everglades crash). CITRUS nodded to AirTran's Florida roots before Southwest Airlines absorbed the carrier in 2014.
ATC SAMPLE TRANSMISSION: "Citrus Eight Seventeen, Atlanta Tower, cleared for takeoff Runway Zero Nine Left."
Middle East Airlines (ME / MEA • Lebanon) National Emblem Est. 1945
Refers to the ancient Cedar of Lebanon (Cedrus libani) emblazoned on the Lebanese national flag and the vertical fins of MEA's Airbus fleet operating out of Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport.
ATC SAMPLE TRANSMISSION: "Cedar Jet Two Zero One, Beirut Tower, wind Two One Zero at Eight knots."
Kalitta Air (K4 / CKS • United States) Aviation Folklore Est. 2000
Named directly after company founder Conrad "Connie" Kalitta, the champion drag racer ("The Bounty Hunter") who built a global Boeing 747 freighter empire out of Ypsilanti, Michigan.
ATC SAMPLE TRANSMISSION: "Connie Seven Four Two Heavy, Anchorage Center, maintain Flight Level Three Four Zero."
Atlas Air (5Y / GTI • United States) Corporate Identity Est. 1992
Reflects the mythological Titan Atlas carrying the heavens on his shoulders and the carrier's status as the world's largest operator of Boeing 747 widebody freighters.
ATC SAMPLE TRANSMISSION: "Giant Eight Two One Heavy, Frankfurt Director, reduce speed to One Eight Zero knots."
National Emblem Est. 2004
Referenced Japan Airlines' iconic Tsurumaru red-crowned crane crest on high-density domestic Boeing 747-400D and 777 trunk routes before domestic and international certificates were unified under JAPANAIR.
ATC SAMPLE TRANSMISSION: "J-Bird Five One Two Heavy, Tokyo Haneda Approach, expect ILS Runway Three Four Left."
